Why don't the orbits of planets and other bodies decay?

I've got this question It's kind of mind-boggling how the planets haven't spiraled into the Sun, or out into space. Is there something different about elliptical orbits that prevents this from happening?

My favorite decision is I can think of a couple of reasons why they do decay over extended periods (and they do). Basically, you are talking about a loss of orbital energy due to a non-reversible process of some sort. Examples include: 1. Impact by other foreign bodies. Over extended periods of time, this would result in a change in angular momentum and a resultant change in orbital energy. 2. Tidal forces. If the planets were perfectly spherical and perfectly rigid, this would not be an issue. But they are really more like oblate blobs of Jell-O being squeezed out of shape as they orbit. This also takes energy from the gravitational system that drives the orbit. ADDED: Danny, as you can tell from the wording of my response, I originally mis-read your question. I guess the question is, why don't they decay faster than they do? Time on a solar scale is sort of a perception problem for most of us - including me. Orbits seem to decay over very long periods to us little humans living out our brief lives as the planets whirl around our heads. But they are not so long in astronomical terms. The Earth probably once had a nice set of rings - like Saturn. Those didn't take too long to disappear - only a few million years. Things are changing all around us. It just happens too slowly for us impatient humans, who have evolved to perceive and catch stuff to eat that really moves quickly.
