What is this sports medicine treatment called?

Are You know decision of this problem? My friend is a football player at our college and he hurt his knee. He had to go down to the trainers like everyday and lay on this table and there was this machine with wires and the wires went to his knee...I think it was emitting some type of electrical pulse. It was for pain relief. He said it hurt a little while the machine was going and the trainer said it was probably because it was up too high and he should have asked her to turn it down. But once he got up and started moving, around he said it felt a lot better. What is this treatment called? I can't ask the trainers because I would like an answer like right now, and they're gone for the day, and besides, its finals week and I don't have time to go down there. And I can't ask my friend because we're actually not speaking right now lol and I doubt he knows anyway.

My favorite decision is Electrical Stimulation. There are many different types, but the most commonly used for pain relief if Interferential or Premodulated. This is often done after an Ultrasound treatment, exercise, and then the electrical stim with ice to the area. Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Chiropractors, and some Athletic Trainer's are allowed to perform these treatments.
