Physics-angular momentum?

I have such question Halley's comet moves about the sun in an elliptical orbit with its closest approach to the SUn being .59AU and its greatest distance being 35AU (1AU=Earth-sun distance) if the comet's speed at closest approach is 54km/s what is its speed when it is farthest from the Sun? you may neglect any change in the comet's mass and assume that its angular momentum about the sun is conserved. btw the answer in the back of the book is 910 m/s I dunno it doesnt come out for me XD

Ok, what I can say about this Come on now Becky. The formula for angular momentum is pretty basic for this system, since at the perigee and apogee of an elliptical orbit, the velocity is completely perpendicular to the radius (silly you). So, angular momentum L = m v r If at r_1=0.59 AU, v_1= 54 km/s L_2 = L_1 (conservation of angular momentum) v_2*m*r_2 = v_1*m*r_1 v_2 = (v_1*m*r_1) / (m*r_2) =(54 * m * 0.59) / (m * 35) = 0.910 km/s or 910 m/s
