Running for Boxing. Need opinions?

Today's question is I just got my g/f's 16 yr. old son into a local boxing gym a week ago. Now I boxed when I was a kid and also did it in the Army. I'm kind of flustered cause these "new age" trainers are telling the kid not to worry about long distance running. They're saying it hurts more than helps! What the hell? Has the yuppie fitness craze finally taken over Boxing too? I'm 31 and began boxing when at 14. Even in the Army the trainers highly encouraged running. At least 3-4 miles, 4-5 times a week. And to be honest....it really helped me in the ring and my stamina was great. I would run at least 20 miles a week and the guys who only did wind sprints and added a little running to their training ran out of gas after 2-3 rounds. I did sprints too but focused on long runs more. And if any of you die hard boxing fans know, long distance running didn't seem to hurt fighters like Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Ali or any other of the greats, so why is it, after 60 plus years of good old fashioned hard core training, today's new trainers are trying to sell this crap about running? Even Sugar Ray Leonard said he used to run 4-6 miles everyday even when he wasn't training for a fight and he knew it helped him tremendously during a fight! My thought is that everybody is looking for an easy way out of training in any sport. Oh yeah, Rocky Marciano would run 10-15 miles everyday while in training before a fight and even kept it up when he wasn't fighting and he had enough gas left to knock opponents out in the last rounds. So please tell me where long distance running is bad for Boxers, please!

Ok, what I can say about this Long distance running is key for boxing. At least three miles a day, preferably at least 5. Modern trainers like to deny the fact that boxers need to run long distance because they know that their students (usually children) get put off by the fact that running can be dreadful and boring. You might be surprised to know that Marciano actually ran up to 19 miles a day the few days before a fight, 15 miles was only every day in the coming month of the fight. Emanuel Steward knew ahead of time that when he was training Lennox for his fight against Holyfield, Lennox would have a huge advantage because he did his running, whereas Emanuel knew that Holyfield hated roadwork (when he was training Evander, he had to practically drag him to do his roadwork). Running is probably the second most important part of training for boxing, right behind sparring.
