What does the elliptical bike chain disk do for a bike rider?

Today's question is i was watching stage 18 of the tour de france, the individual time trials, and i saw the irregular egg shaped chain disk of bradley wiggins. what advantage or disadvantage does this give a rider compared to one that has a circular chain disk?

Ok, what I can say about this See the "Elliptical Chainwheel" entry from Sheldon Brown's glossary. http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gloss_e-f.ht… Basically, it is supposed to transfer more power to the horizontal crank position, which is the power position on the front chainring.
