Should I start by running on the treadmill instead of outside?
Today's question is When I run outside (I just started getting into shape.....I am very overweight right now) my legs hurt a lot sooner and I cannot run for as long (right now I can only run outside for about half my neighborhood before having to walk). When I ran on the treadmill I could go further and a little faster. Should I start by using the treadmill until I can run 1 mile nonstop then start running outside? Would it be easier for me to get into shape that way? I also am going to be working out 3 days per week with machines and free weights to build muscle and in turn burn more fat when not working out.
Ok, what I can say about this Treadmill running is not as good as running outside, but it's unavoidable since it gets dark earlier and it is getting much colder outside. (Though of course that depends on where you live) Treadmills give you more support and cushioning while running so that your legs are not as taxed as they would be if you ran outside on pavement, asphalt, or any other similar hard surface. This is good for you since you are just starting out. Your goal of running at least a mile non-stop on a treadmill before heading out seems like a good plan - it definitely isn't a bad one. Treadmill running is good because it allows you to set and measure your pace while allowing you to go farther and possibly faster than you normally would be due to, as I mentioned, it being easier on your legs. One thing about treadmill running is that if you run on a treadmill too much, it may actually be harmful to you in that your legs get so used to treadmill running and the cushioning and support it provides that when you go outside it may be tougher on you (especially your legs). The likelihood of injury is therefore greater if you do all treadmill running then suddenly switch to outside running while maintaining the same level of intensity. I suggest running inside and outside every week - though running outside will be at a slower pace and for a shorter time or distance, it will still be better than all treadmill running in the long run I think. I'd also suggest using the elliptical machine and/or a bike. And lifting is definitely a good idea! Just remember not to go too hard too fast, go at your own pace. You definitely do not want to overwork yourself, that doesn't help you at all.
