What can I do instead of cycling during the winter?
Are You know decision of this problem? I am 19 years old, in moderate shape... out of shape really to be totally honest. I'm a former dancer, basketball and soccer player as well as long distance runner. But, since I graduated from high school it's been really difficult to keep up with all of these things. Every now and then I have the energy to do a few rounds of one of the aforementioned activities, but I just don't have the same stamina that I once did. Well, I started cycling recently just for transit at first, but found it quite enjoyable. So, slowly, but surely I've been regaining my energy and strength from this. I love to cycle and do it several times daily, but unfortunately the summer is ending and the ever looming shadow of a Minnesota winter is slowly dawning upon me. There's no way to cycle during the winter this far up North where snow gets to be 3-6 feet deep. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what else it is I could do to substitute for my cycling(without getting a cycling machine, which could never really replace the endorphin rush from real cycling anyway)? I'd prefer to do something indoors, but find that running on the treadmill is really a bother as well(and yes, I do have one of these in my home). Is there some other new exercise machine or activity out there that can compare to cycling? Something indoors, something easily accessible and something as exhilrating?
My favorite decision is I can understand how you feel about trying to stay fit during the winter months in a frigid place like Minnesota. I spent many winters in upstate New York at Cornell University, where it was usually cold and snowy. Riding a bicycle during these conditions is hazardous to your health, especially if you increase your speed to workout levels. Stopping quickly on snow and ice is nearly an impossible task. I understand the rush you get from bicycling too, and the feeling that it can't be recreated very well indoors on a stationary bike. I have a few different ideas for you. Rope skipping is a fantastic way to build general fitness and endurance. There are so many different variations you can employ. Please click on the first link below to see a fitness expert named Lyen Wong going through a blistering workout using nothing more than a piece of rope. A second suggestion to try is an elliptical trainer. It uses all muscles in your body, and will give you as good or better a workout as bicycling outdoors. Check the second link for more information about these machines. Finally, I can't recommend the TotalGym highly enough either. Chuck Norris is probably the fittest sixty-nine-year-old in the world, and he uses this machine every day. It builds both endurance and strength and is exhilarating and fun too. Ask for a refurbished model for a price break. You may be able to find one in the Thrifty Nickel too for a good deal. All my best to you in finding a good winter routine during the frigid Minnesota winters. One last thought--running up and down stairs is a great workout, and you may be able to find an office building to do it in.
