Answer if you "think" you know about fitness and being healthy?

Are You know decision of this problem? A little over a month ago, I weighed 256 lbs. I hit the weights for a week, and then for the last 3 or 4 weeks I have done 45 minutes on the elliptical a day, and rotated a push up, sit up workout throughout the week. I eat a high protein diet, lots of chicken, fish, veggies, and protein shakes. I seem to have hit a plateau. I weigh 235 now, and don't seem to be loosing or gaining any weight, and I still look fat. What can I do to continue to shred the fat?

My favorite decision is After 3 to 4 weeks of the same exercise routine, it is likely that this is a plateau. For some people they come faster and others it takes a bit longer. This isn't necessarily a positive or negative thing, but rather a milestone that your body has adapted to its current workload. The information provided about the exercise routine and diet above, while good compared to some of the submissions is lacking in some key certainties. So here is what I "think" based on the information you shared and a few assumptions. Short Answer: Make a change to your diet or to your routine or both. Long answer: Let's start with diet. Do you eat breakfast everyday? I am not talking about the bowl of cereal breakfast either. The first meal upon waking whether you sleep all day or all night is important for your body's normal rhythm. Personally, I allow myself more liberties at the first meal because I know I have longer to burn off those added calories. Don't go too crazy with these liberties because you will be working counter to your goals of shredding. How often are you eating? Do you get hungry between meals? Look at spacing the meals out at different intervals. What and how much are you eating between the traditional morning, noon and night meals? I recently heard someone state that they ate 6 full meals a day and wasn't losing any weight. When I asked, he gave me the run down on his diet. Let's just say he was consuming six 3-course meals a day. This is not exactly what is meant when they state that you should eat more often. To "shred the fat" or "get ripped" you have to control or limit the intake of calories. Basically, you are on a diet. So the mid-morning meal became mid-morning snack and ended up being an apple and half of a small chicken breast. Which was later replaced with a protein shake for both the morning and afternoon snack. Speaking of protein shakes. Consider what type of protein, Casein, Whey others.., see which works best with your body. Also, read the labels. Some powders are a 50/50 mix of protein to carbohydrates. Size of the shakes...Most shakes are based on one measured scoop, typically included in the jug to 6 or 8 ounces of milk or water. Measure this out, 8 ozs is really not much. Re-balance your diet. High protein is good, but don't forget that you need carbohydrates. Fats are inherent in foods and you need certain fats to be healthy. Not in excess mind you. There are many other things you can do with your diet that I will not go into because this answer would be exceptionally long. Read a fitness magazine. Speak with or hire a personal trainer. Exercise Routine. Time to get creative. Those 45 minutes you have been doing, start to vary your speed. Go fast for minute and then slow for a minute. Adjust the tension or resistance. Try something else. Treadmill, step climbers, stationary bike. Walk or jog around your block. Vary your days. Meaning, 3 days a week for 45 on the elliptical and the rest on the treadmill. Try going for 30 minutes and be especially strict on your diet those days. Add more weight training. The more lean muscle mass you have the more calories you are going to burn when not on a machine. Comparatively speaking. Again, read a fitness magazine. Speak to or hire a personal trainer. Hit the internet for new routines that may work for you. Intangibles: Those things that the normal diet and exercise don't cover. Where is your fat? I am not asking is it on your legs or arms or belly but rather is your fat under the muscles, visceral or over the muscles, subcutaneous..Visceral fat, is usually the easier of the 2 to get rid of and is typically the more dangerous as this is the fat that encroaches upon organs. The good news, most people can get rid of this fat and keep it in check through regular diet and exercise. Subcutaneous, the kind you see when you grab and pinch your belly or wherever, is the kind that most people are concerned with. Bad news, you are going to have to deal with a lot of aerobic exercise and a controlled diet to get rid of this. How much water are you drinking? Proper hydration will help not only with weight loss but internal temperature regulation and cellular viscosity. Good things. Are you resting enough? Over-training is possible. and that is why some people break up their workouts. I also refer to actual sleep time. This is when your body repairs and replenishes. Hire a trainer. Having someone with experience and new ideas will help with the monotonous that will ensue with prolonged training for a specific goal. Vitamins and supplements, not just for professional athletes. I am by no means endorsing a specific one or the other but you may want to consider adding these to your diet. Certain vitamins will help replenish trace minerals that are hard to come by in the foods and quantities that will be expelled during exercise. Summary: CONSISTENCY is the key in any training program. Also, you refer to weight, muscle weighs more than fat. Don't rely strictly on the scale, get a tape and measure your progress.
