I've started exercising and...?

Today's question is I'm a 20 year old male college student that has never really been in the best shape. Since about 4th grade, I've been kind of heavy (still within an acceptable BMI i.e. not obese). Last semester though I faced a lot of stress, irregular eating habits (not eating at regular times due to classes and eating a lot of unhealthy food because the normal dining halls were closed), and being so insecure that I didn't want to go to the gym. Needless to say, I gained a lot of weight (which my stepmom's family felt like highlighting at Christmas). Anyway, I've started to make some changes. I've started going to the gym 3 times a week doing a mix of cardio (Biking or elliptical for 30 - 60 minutes and 400-800 calories according to the machine) and strength (arms, back, and chest mainly). I'm feeling some results already (better sleep, clothes fit, better self-image). I also am trying to eat better (more salads with darker greens and less dressing). Anyway, can you give me some advice to keep improving? I try to exercise shortly after I get up. Should I eat before or after? How much before or after? Should I exercise later in the day? Could I do mornings M,W,F and afternoons T,Th or should I be consistent? What are some good ab exercises that I could do? Anything else?

And I found this way Hey sounds like your motivated, good job. What i suggest is doing research on metabolism. Have a firm understanding of what it is, as it is very important. Also, google search: Upper body workouts & create a routine for yourself Also: google search: Core exercises and create a routine for yourself. Caculate your BMR (see link), so you know approximately how many calories your burning a day. That way, you can figure out how many pounds you want to lose a week, (500 less calories a day or 1000 less calories a day). When you on the treadmill, i suggest having 5 lb weights in your hands with a medium speed & high incline. Also, find an easy way to break up your weeks up like: Mon: Cardio + abs Tues: Cardio + abs Wed: Weights Thur: Cardio + abs Fri: Cardio + abs Sat: Weights Sun: Rest/Study/Cram Good luck!
